LESSON 2.26 DESIGN - CONSTRUCTION A
TYRE POND
Using an old tyre
to make a frog pond is a very creative way of recycling such an unwastable. (I
do have some reservations though, as there is a possibility of heavy chemicals
leaching into the water from the tyre). An old truck or tractor tyre that is
not steel- belted, will make quite a sizeable pond but any size tyre will do.
Dig a hole that is
slightly larger than the tyre and taper it down to about two feet, then line it
with a heavy-duty plastic such as a bit of swimming pool liner or an
equivalent. Some people have used builder’s plastic, but it does deteriorate
after time and could cause the pond to leak. The tyre needs to have one of its
sides cut back with a heavy knife. Water thrown over it will add lubrication to
the cutting process, and this will make it easier to do the job.
Place the prepared tyre into the hole on top of the plastic with the cut off edge facing up and bring the ends of the plastic over the top edge of the hole and trim of neatly. Place rocks or bricks in a circular form around the pond to cover the plastic and help keep it into place. To finish with plant around the edge of the rocks for the frogs to hide in.Text from the roots, Elisabeth Ferkonia (Aus.) PDC studied with Bill Mollison,
