PDC LESSON 1.15 PRINZIPLES OF COOPERATION
Cooperation not competition, is the very
basis of existing life systems and of future survival.
Western tradition, especially since Charles Darwin’s
writings on the evolution of species has prioritised competition over
cooperation.
This is especially evident in our financial and
economic systems. Darwin was misquoted and said: “Survival of the best fit”,
meaning that organism that has adapted the most fit its environment will survive.
There has also been a scientific tradition of
“reductionism”, which has led to a splintering and separation of many
disciplines. In the 1960s and 1970s a more inclusive and holistic way of
looking at life and the world around us began to emerge. Permaculture was at
the forefront of this “movement”, advocating the integration of many
disciplines into the design process. By the early 21st century
multi-disciplinary degrees has become more common, but a multi-disciplinary
approach to human settlement is still rare in practice.
Aim to be self-reliant, not self-sufficient. Play well with others and share your toys.
