PDC LESSON 2.11 DESIGN - BANANA
CIRCLES
Banana Circles
are designed to water and feed banana plants without the effort of
physically looking after them. Dig quite a deep hole about two metres across
and one metre deep. Place the dirt from the hole around the perimeter to create
a mound. Plant the banana suckers or corms on top of the mound and start to
fill in the hole with chop and drop mulch.
As the bananas grow it’s important to keep them from clumping too much.
A mother, teenager and baby are quite adequate, as they will each in turn have
a chance to grow to maturity without robbing too much nutrient from the one
clump. When a bunch of bananas has matured and is harvested, the entire tree
can then be chopped down and disposed of into the hole and this will in turn
break down to provide its own compost.
I’ve
seen an outdoor shower made in a banana circle, it worked well.
