PDC LESSON 2.16 DESIGN - DEEP LITTER SYSTEM
A deep litter system is best done in a fixed pen as a deep layer can be built up over time simply by throwing in lots of chops and drop material. This can include garden weeds, old plants the odd bale of hay, cow manure etc.
Let the chicken work for you.
A rich mulch layer will eventually be the result, and
this can then be put onto the garden or compost heap. There are two schools of
thought on this as some say all the litter should remain dry so it will turn
into a fine powdery mass and keep the chooks from getting parasites, whilst
others think that out in the open where the rain can get to it will do the job
just as well. The bonus of an outside deep litter system is that worms and
insects are to be found underneath the mulch layer because they are attracted
to the moisture and the decomposing material. This is of course a great source
of protein for the chooks, hence cutting down on their food bill and having
even more eggs.
