PDC LESSON 2.3 DESIGN - SWALES
Swales are an ingenious way of keeping water on your land for as long as possible. By digging shallow trenches with a bund (raised mound of soil) on the downside, the runoff rains will be attracted to pause into the trench and then be absorbed into the deeper earth of the mound. The trenches need to be dug on contour for this to be successful. A dumpy level or an A frame can be used to determine the line of contour, the levels marked out with stakes and then a bulldozer can be employed to do the job. This can be a major earthwork project and needs to be done before any infrastructure is put in place. Text from the roots, Elisabeth Ferkonia (Aus.) PDC studied with Bill Mollison,
