PDC LESSON 2.34 NARROW BEDS
PERMACULTURE
COURSE AGRO-ECONOMY
Narrow Beds
Narrow beds close to the house and herb spiral. Easy access to pick the green leaves.
Path side plucking vegetables
such as long bearing plants, eggplant, silver beet, celery, kale, mustard
greens etc.
Tomato beds could be narrow so
they ca be reached from both sides.
They can also consist of
zuchinnis, peas, eggplant etc.
At the beginning it is always important to consider how they work and with what tools. I mean, are you working by hand, then you need 90 cm wide beds, or are you working with a small machine; then they need wider beds to pull the weeds between the beds with the machine. Then it depends on how much water you have for your garden and how big it is. If they just don't have enough water, then it is enough that they create narrow beds and possibly lay a drip line along this one bed and the plants there. As already described, it makes sense to harvest tomatoes from both sides, as does peppers. Lettuce or spinach can be planted on other beds since the bed is harvested completely. There are not only parts to harvest that are ripe, but the whole bed at once.
Always remember the worst time in
your growing season so you have enough water for that period, or you can hose
down enough water, otherwise all the work is for naught. The plants need the
most water during their final phase, which is usually in summer.
