PDC LESSON 2.48 DESIGN – BARRIER HEDGES
If your organic farm is adjacent to other farms that operate conventionally
and use pesticides as well as genetically modified seeds, then it makes a lot
of sense that you protect your farm. The wind can transfer the seeds and
pollination from other farms to your farm. Protection against it can only be a
hedge that grows up as a barrier and protects you. These can be taller bushes
or densely planted pine trees or olive trees.
If you want to apply
for organic
certification, this is very
important, as a ditch should also be dug around your farm so that in heavy rain
and flooding of the other farms, the pesticides from there do not wash onto
your land. Without such a hedge as a barrier, you will always have problems
with unwanted pollination from other farms. Also, the weed seeds from these
farms will be blown onto your land without protection.
