PDC LESSON 2.55 DESIGN – HUGELKULTUR Part -1- WHAT IS THAT

Hoo-guh-what?! Hugelkultur, pronounced "Hoo-Gul culture", means hill culture or hill hill in German. Mound culture raised beds are steadfast raised beds that retain moisture, build fertility and maximize surface volume so you get double the yield when harvest time arrives.

So, instead of lugging all your raked branches, leaves, and grass clippings to the compost for a large garden, build a mound culture raised bed in multiple locations!

What is hill culture?

According to permaculture expert Sepp Holzer

"Mound culture is nothing more than filling raised beds with rotting wood. This provides raised beds with organic matter, nutrients, air pockets for the roots of whatever you're planting, etc. Over the years, the deep soil of your raised garden bed will become incredibly rich and with ground life filled."

Hill culture raised beds: An age-old technique that has gardeners turning their heads

Hoo-guh-what?! Hügelkultur, pronounced "Hoo-Gul culture", means hill culture or hill hill in German. Mound culture raised beds are steadfast raised beds that retain moisture, build fertility and maximize surface volume so you get double the yield when harvest time arrives.

So, instead of stashing all your raked branches, leaves, and grass clippings in roadside bags, build a hill culture raised bed!

Mound culture raised beds are similar to lasagna gardening and leaf mulching—methods that require no digging and no tillage and result in rich, fluffy soil with very little work from the gardener. Mound culture raised beds, like lasagna gardening and leaf mulching, are especially effective in areas with poor soil quality because they are built above the soil surface. The layers of these methods help retain nutrients in the soil much longer than if compost or fertilizer were applied directly to the soil surface.

While mound culture is similar to gardening methods like lasagna gardening and leaf mulching, it still differs in a few key ways.
