PDC LESSON 3.11 SEEDS – HOW MANY TO SELECT
How many to select
- more rather than less is always
better. This is to ensure a genetic variability. Some plants preserve their
genetic variability better than others and here are a few examples.
Self-pollinating
plants such as tomatoes, lettuce, beans, and peas need
1 to 6 plants reserved for seed saving. They are natural in-breeders. If you
only save the seed from 1 plant year after year, this will eventually lead to
inbreeding-depression and will eventually cause the strain to run out.
Cucurbits such as pumpkins, melons and cucumbers need to have around 6 fruits
saved for seed saving. It is an advantage to keep seed from pumpkins of
different vines rather than only from 1 vine.
Corn and onions need to have the seed saved from many
individuals to maintain genetic variability. 50- 100 cobs from different plants
need to be saved from the corn stalks whilst the seed heads from about 20
onions and leeks need to be kept maintaining enough genetic variability.
