Darkness
the action of light also has a detrimental effect on
seed viability. Put them in paper bags or dark coloured jars or store them in a
cupboard.
Moisture
excessive moisture will allow the seed to overheat and
become like compost. Different seed coat thicknesses will determine how soon
moisture will affect seed viability. Most seed need to be stored at 10% or
below humidity. (Peanuts and soybeans are best stored at 15% because of their
oil content.
At lower
moisture levels seed can handle temperature variations better.
Silica gel crystals can be bought at chemist stores
and will absorb any moisture from the seed in a sealed container. The colour of
the crystals will indicate how much moisture has been absorbed. Blue is dry,
pink is moist. Dry the crystals in the oven until they turn blue again. Dry
rice grains will also do the same job. You can also save silica crystals from
shoe boxes and vitamin pills.
