PDC LESSON 3.21 NURSERY – SEMI
HARDWOOD CUTTINGS
They
can be from woody pieces of branches where the woody part is transforming from
green to a firmer brown or grey wood. These can be from side-shoots or a lower
part of the more mature wooded sections. Again, take of all the leaves except
for the top 2 and cut these in half.
Hardwood cuttings are taken from deciduous trees when they are dormant.
Choose wood that is up to 20mm in diameter for cuttings and cut the sections
into 20 cm lengths. A handy hint when collecting cuttings is to cut the bottom
end at an angle and the top end straight across. This will remind you which way
is up. Plant just when budding starts in the beginning of spring.
