PDC LESSON 3.23 NURSERY – CONTAINER AND POTTING MIX
All containers must have free drainage and the potting
mix must be porous and yet able to hold moisture as well as be free from
disease. A mixture containing 2 parts of
coarse sand, 1 part vermiculite or coconut coir and 1 part charcoal is very
suitable for striking roots on cuttings. There is usually no fertiliser present
in these potting mixes, but a high phosphorus additive is useful to encourage
rooting.
Root-promoting hormones
(or
cuttings dipped in honey) can help cuttings to grow roots quickly. Dip the cut
ends into the powder before planting and with a pencil, make a hole into the
potting media and carefully insert the tip cutting into it.
Micro-climate
is
important especially if the surrounding
air has low humidity. Placing a plastic covering over the pot or container will
help to create a humid atmosphere. Do allow some free-flowing air to circulate
otherwise there can be a mould problem. Don’t expose the cuttings to full sun
but rather chooses a semi-shaded area.
