PDC LESSON 3.25 NURSERY – CONSTRUCT A NURSERY
The Permaculture
nursery- quick and cheap made from stakes, poly-pipe and shade-cloth.
For a small nursery-
·
6 star pickets
·
polypipe 2’’ wide
(to be able to slide over the star pickets)
·
shadecloth
·
small sections of
poly pipe to turn into clips to hold the shadecloth in place
·
metal door jamb
and screen door
·
2 lengths of
re-inforcement rods and bolts to connect to poly pipe
Inside the
nursery-
·
A potting bench
·
Trough for washing pots
·
Storage area for
pots, trays and tools
·
A white board for
notes and reminders / corkboard to attach seed packets
·
A general purpose
bench for hardening off plants
*Aspect
of the nursery should be full sun most of the day.
*Shade
cloth from 50%.
*The
benches should be positioned in full sun and be made from metal.
*Wood
can harbour fungal diseases.
*You
will need a good supply of pots and trays within easy reach and extra benches with roller coaster
wheels could be useful.
*An ironing board can be used as a potting table.
*Best to pot up outside of the nursery where there is
more fresh air.
*The floor should be covered with fine gravel for easy
drainage.
*Place the potting area on the south side of the
nursery.
A seed raising nursery with a plastic covering over
it.
(These can be bought at various hardware stores. A
metal frame with shelves and a plastic zip up covering to create a humid
atmosphere)
