PDC LESSON 3.27 NURSERY – Raising seedlings

 

Nursery -

Raising plants from seed- there are many factors to consider when planting out seed for successful germination.

 

•         Soil warmth

•         Air

•         Suitable time of year

•         Depth and spacing

•         Available sunlight

•         Even soil moisture

•         Day length hours

•         Viable seed

•         Chilling of some seed (stratification)

•         Scarifying (scratching the seed coat)

•         Smoking and fire for some native seed

•         Hot water soaking

•         Keep out vermin and other animals

 

(a lot of farmers have observed that 3-year-old pumpkin seeds will produce more female flowers than fresh seed)
