Chilling of some
seed (stratification)

Scarifying
(scratching the seed coat)

for some native seed

Hot water soaking

Keep out vermin
and other animals
(a
lot of farmers have observed that 3-year-old pumpkin seeds will produce more
female flowers than fresh seed)
