PDC LESSON 3.28 NURSERY – HOW A SEED GERMINATE

Once the seed is planted it simply absorbs water and swells. Seed will             absorb around 50% of its own body weight in water as they begin to                 germinate so they must not dry out at this stage.

The seed coat will then crack open, and the seed begins to breathe

Uptake of water continues and the reserves of the starches within the               seed are activated for food

Cell division begins and the root radicle emerges

The leaves then push up towards the light

The seedlings can now have a light feed of compost tea or vermicast               liquid

Most plants need darkness to germinate but some need sun, like tomatoes and pepper
