PDC LESSON 3.28 NURSERY – HOW A SEED GERMINATE
•
Once the seed is planted it simply absorbs water and
swells. Seed will absorb around 50% of its own body weight in water as they
begin to germinate so they must not dry out at this stage.
•
The seed coat will then crack open, and the seed
begins to breathe
•
Uptake of water continues and the reserves of the
starches within the seed are activated for food
•
Cell division begins and the root radicle emerges
•
The leaves then push up towards the light
•
The seedlings can now have a light feed of compost tea
or vermicast liquid
Most plants need darkness to germinate but some need
sun, like tomatoes and pepper
