PDC LESSON 3.29 NURSERY – GERMINATION TIPS

Problems with the growing medium

May be too wet- too much water causes seed to rot

Maybe too dry- cover seed with some shade-cloth or create a humid tent         with a plastic covering making sure there is adequate air circulation

Fungal disease- use fresh seed as much as possible

Growing medium too well-drained or compacted

Planting depth- very fine seed need to be pressed onto the soil mix.                 Lower soil temperatures will adversely affect seed planted too deep seed         can rot. In a hot climate however, corn seed may be planted 5cm deep to         prevent drying out and give the developing roots some soil depth to                 prevent them from falling over in windy weather.

Keep out animals to prevent them from digging up seed Including                 turkeys.
