PDC LESSON 4.12 SOIL - Testing Your Soil Texture
A method of testing your soil type is to do a soil test in water. Place some soil in a jar ( 4 cm deep) and add water to about three quarters full. Put the lid on the jar and give a good shake. Allow the jar to sit undisturbed for at least 24 hours or until the water becomes clear. Depending on your soil type this can take anything from a few days to well over a week.
Out of a total
thickness of 4 cm of soil depth, the layers of a good soil will measure
something like the following:
2.1 cm
1.3 cm
0,6 cm
This will be-
45% sand and grit
33% silt
22% clay
The organic matter
will be the top layer with more of it floating on top of the water. If the
water remains milky or turbid, this is a suspension of very fine or colloidal
clay. There are many different soil textures, but they can be divided into the
following groups: see 4.13
