PDC LESSON 7.8 COMPOST - COMMEN PROBLEMS
Common problems
If the heap starts
to smell unpleasant there may be too much nitrogen rich material. Add some dry
straw etc.
If the compost
heap smells sour, it might be too wet. Make sure it is covered in heavy rain.
You’ve done all
the right things but nothing much is happening? Add some compost activators.
Diluted urine is great! Next time you turn the heap you might like to place a
dead chook etc. in the middle towards the bottom of the pile and add some more
water if necessary. Compost will rot down to about 40% of its original size.
A good hint to
finish off with. If toads are attracted to your compost heap you can be sure
you’re doing it right. Toads are attracted to the bugs that are attracted to
the compost, so next time you see them around don’t curse them, they might be
trying to tell you something!
